Becky Lallande is an instructor and company member of Word Dance Theater where she has received training in Duncan technique with an emphasis on teaching dance and movement for youth. Becky holds a BA in Religion from the University of Mary Washington while she also studied dance and vocal performance. Since returning to Northern Virginia, Becky joined the DC hip hop team Capital Funk and received certification in dance choreography through Dance ICONS, an international choreographic institute based in Washington, DC. Becky is a teaching artist with Wolf Trap’s Institute of Early Learning in the Arts, InnerCity-InnerChild, Sitar Arts Center, and Go Bananas Dancing, where she shares creative movement through dance, imagination, and rhythmic exploration with young children in classrooms and community centers. Becky loves the joy and beauty in dance and especially adores watching the growth and happiness it brings to children.
Mary Norris studied modern dance as an undergraduate and graduate student, but lost touch with dance during her years overseas working with the U.S. Agency for International Development. She is delighted to now have the chance to train again, this time in the Duncan technique and philosophy. Mary has trained for three years in the Duncan technique under Cynthia Word, MFA, Certified Duncan Teacher, and the Founder/Director of Word Dance Theater. She has also studied with Valerie Durham, MFA, and Jeanne Bresciani, Ph.D. She has performed in ensemble pieces and one duet. Mary loves Duncan dancing for what it enables her to express, its foundation in nature-based movement, and its rich repertory. Mary believes that Duncan dance imparts emotional, cognitive and physical benefits on its practitioners, and is thrilled to have the opportunity to share her love of the dance in assisting Rebecca Lallande with the Duncan youth classes.
Sylvana Juliet Christopher is a Guamanian American trained at The Washington Ballet with a BFA in Dance from The Ohio State University where she developed a love for dance forms of the African Diaspora and the field of Dance Education. She’s been a member of Arts United of Washington, BosmaDance, Bowen McCauley Dance Company, Glade Dance Collective, Gesel Mason Performance Projects and Rincones & Company Dance Theater. As Word Dance Theater’s instructor she looks forward to sharing the Duncan technique with DC youth.
All registrations are non-refundable with the exception of a 50% return for early bird registrations on a case-by-case basis.
If a child registers with “early bird rate” for more than 1 session at a time and does not continue after the 1st session, then a 50% refund will be given to the amount paid beyond the full session rate. For example if a family paid $270 for 2 sessions, then a refund of the 2nd session would be $60 (half of $120).
Tuition payments are non-transferable.
Classes are framed on a $17 per class structure (plus registration fee), but individual classes will not be refunded if a student is absent.
Trial classes are offered on a case-by-case basis through week 2 of a session; email Ms. Becky at email@example.com to see if there’s room. Trial class cost: $15
If a trial-class student joins the class after the trial class, then WDT will roll the trial class fee into the full tuition.
Prospective students may register for the current season's session through week 2, after week 2, registration will be closed.
