The Dance Exchange (www.danceexchange.org) is a two-block walk from the Takoma Park Metro station (Red Line). Directions from Metro: Exit the Metro and walk straight Carroll Avenue towards the 7-Eleven. Continue for one block to Maple Avenue. Turn left on Maple Avenue and arrive at 7117 on your right. The main entrance and parking lot is at the back of the building.
The Dance Loft on 14 (www.danceloft14.org) is across the street from the WMATA north bus division, on the 2nd floor of it's building. Nearest bus stop is on the same block at 14th St & Buchanan St, which runs the 52, 53, 54, and 59 buses. When entering the Dance Loft on 14, go through the glass doors to the right of the dancer mural and up the stairs to the left.
Classes are offered by Word Dance Theater (www.worddance.org), Washington, DC’s premiere Duncan dance company.
Becky Lallande is an instructor with WDT, where she has received training in Duncan technique with an emphasis on teaching dance and movement for youth. Becky holds a BA in Religion from the University of Mary Washington, where she also studied dance and vocal performance. Since returning to Northern Virginia, Becky joined the DC hip hop team Capital Funk and currently studies dance choreography through Dance ICONS, an international choreographic institute based in Washington, DC. Becky is also a teaching artist through Wolf Trap’s Institute of Early Learning in the Arts and InnerCity-InnerChild where she shares creative movement through dance, imagination, and rhythm with young children in school classrooms and community centers. Becky loves the joy and beauty in dance and especially adores watching the growth and happiness it brings to children! Becky teaches our Duncan Children's classes at the Dance Exchange on Tuesdays.
Sylvana Juliet Christopher is a Guamanian American trained at The Washington Ballet with a BFA in Dance from The Ohio State University where she developed a love for dance forms of the African Diaspora and the field of Dance Education. She’s been a member of Arts United of Washington, BosmaDance, Bowen McCauley Dance Company, Glade Dance Collective, Gesel Mason Performance Projects and Rincones & Company Dance Theater. As Word Dance Theater’s instructor she looks forward to sharing the Duncan technique with DC youth. Sylvana teaches our Duncan Children's classes at the Dance Loft on 14 on Thursdays.
All registrations are non-refundable, with the exception of a 50% return for early bird registrations on a case-by-case basis. Classes are framed on a $15 per class structure, but individual classes will not be refunded if a student is absent. If a new or wait-listed student joins the class after the first week, then WDT offers that student a pro-rated rate from the $15 per class structure. Prospective students may register for the season's session through week 3, after week 3, registration will be closed.
Inclement Weather Policies
In the event of inclement weather, parents and students are responsible for checking for changes to the Word Dance Theater Youth schedule which will be posted on our website (www.worddanceyouth.com) by the following times:
7:00 am: For classes that begin between 8:30am-2:00pm
2:00 pm: For classes that begin at 3:00pm or later.
If Montgomery County Schools close, WDT will not have classes that day.
